The Backbone

While the teams are what has attracted the fame that the city of Boston deserves, what truly shapes the great sports town, are the fans and the media that so avidly cheer, and criticizes the teams. The fans and the media are known to be some of the toughest but yet most intelligent fans and media in the entire country.
The fans are what make Boston and Boston sports what they are today and what they have always been. To put it bluntly Boston fans live and die with the team. If the Red Sox of the Pats win then the city is happy and people with celebrate like no other place in the world. But if the teams lose the entire city gets mad. Not just a few people throwing a few cans, but an entire city will have a bitter attitude on life. Boston fans also seem to be very knowledgeable fans. Fans know their teams very well from ownership to each player even the 4th string quarterback, and also a great knowledge of the sports that each team participates in. However one thing that comes with such knowledge is that the fans also become very critical of the team when things don’t go the right way. Since each fans think that they could run the team, everyone has there own opinion about how the coach should have played each situation. One example of faithful the fans are is that the Red Sox have sold out over a 100 straight games and at Fenway Park and the Patriots have done the same over the past 3 seasons. The fans love and passion for the teams carries over into the media as well.
Boston media has been known to have the power to run a player out of town. If a media member hears something unforgiving about a certain player they have the ability through articles and the news to have the player disliked by the entire fan base. The Boston Globe is a fine example of how serious the media takes its sports. The globe sports page has been voted the top sports page in the country several years. While the teams are the basis of the Boston’s love for sports the fans and the media create the buzz each year about the teams that brings the passion and love to city for every season of every team.

Last but not Least, Super Bowl Champs

The final great team located in the city of Boston, is none other than the reigning super bowl champions the New England Patriots. While some people try to say that the Pats are not a Boston team since they aren’t called the Boston Patriots, the team plays only 20 minutes outside the city and all of Boston cheers for the Pats during football, I think that makes them a team that characterizes the city of Boston. The New England Patriots have to be considered one of the best football teams to ever play the game. Not only have they won 2 of the last 3 Super Bowl, they hold the record for most consecutive wins in the regular season and most consecutive in regular season and playoffs combined with 21 wins. They are tied for the league best record at the moment at 7-1, and are looking to win their 3rd super bowl this year, for they remain strong favorites. People have to consider the Patriots a dynasty in the NFL now for the difficulty that exists for teams to be consistently power houses like the Pats have been. The Patriots success stems from the great management and ownership that runs the teams. Bob Kraft has created a great team that has been competitive for many years and his hard work has paid off with his two rings. The Patriots complete the four teams that play out of Boston and help make it the best sports city, however the media and the fans from Boston also add to the city's flavor.

If you haven’t heard the Boston Red Sox are the new world champs of major league baseball. The Red Sox not only won the World Series in four games but in the process completely shred any doubt that the cardinals had a chance of winning. Never trailed in any game for very long and the Cards bats never came alive even though they had been hyped up so big in past two series versus the Dodgers and the Astros. I wish I could have been in the city when the final out was record for a pure feeling of relief was just lifted off of the best sports city in the country. Boston proved it was the best by the reaction to the victory and then the attendance at the parade that followed that Saturday. Red Sox nation as the fans refer to themselves has poured out of every town and village to congregate in the fine city of Boston, with people numbering has high as 3.5 million. If you can tell me of another city with the similar size to Boston that has produced a victory crowd that big I would love to hear it.
For the last century the Boston Red Sox have been one of the most historic franchises in all of baseball but had never been able to break the hump or the curse as some referred to it as, and win the championship. The team is believed to be cursed due to the fact that in 1918 the last year the Red Sox won it all, they sold possibly the best player to play the game, Babe Ruth, to the hated New York Yankees. Since that sale, the Red Sox have come as close as you can to winning but have fallen painfully short. Over the years the team has been littered with hall of fame players from Ted Williams, considered one of the best pure hitters to every play the game, to Carl Yastremski, the last player to win the Triple Crown. But no combination was able to win the ring until this year. The Red Sox are of one of the main reasons that Boston is such a great sports town.

Two Other Great Teams, Bruins and Celtics

The Boston Bruins and the Boston Celtics are two of Boston's other storied franchises. They both are littered with famous players, great moments and many championships. The two teams have always been popular in Boston and around the country as the top teams in their respective sports, basketball for the Celtics and hockey for the Bruins. I have never had a great interest in either sport but both of these teams hold a special place in my heart and have increased my interest for their given sport.
While many NBA fans know are focused on team like the Lakers and the Pistons, many tend to forget about possibly the most historic and successful franchise in all of the years of the NBA existence, The Boston Celtics. The Celtic are the only team in history to win 10 straight championships from the years 58’ to 68’. No other team has come close to matching that with the Bulls and the Lakers winning three. Through out the years the team has been littered with hall of fame players from the likes of the great white hype Larry Bird to generals in the middle like Bill Russell. However one of the most famous parts of the Celtics Franchise is legendary Coach Red Aurebach, the coach with the most rings in NBA history, one more than the great Phil Jackson of the Lakers and Bulls. The Celtics are mirror with greatness by the team that they shared the Boston Garden and now the Fleet Center with, the Boston Bruins.
The Boston Bruins are also one of most historic NHL team, and are a member of the original 6, which is the first 6 teams that formed the NHL, in cities like New York, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto and Detroit. The Bruins have been decorated with many championships in the 70’s and 80’s and have made it to the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 years. The franchise has also be graced by many hall of fame players as well in likes of the great Bobby Orr and who many consider the best defenseman to ever play the game in Ray Bourque.
The Bruins and the Celtics are just two more reasons why Boston should be considered the best sports city in the country.

Greatest Comeback

It has been talked about for a few days now, but the Red Sox 4 game comeback is quite simply the greatest comeback in sports history. Not only did the Red Sox come back from a 3-0 hole but they did it against the team that always seems to find a way to beat them. The Red Sox went against all the odds and beat the hated New York Yankees to get their first trip to the World Series since 1986. One has to understand the pain and agony that Red Sox fans or "Red Sox Nation" as they are refered to. Every March and and April Red sox fans go into the season having hopes that this will be the year that they beat the curse and the yankees and win the world series. But every year expect this one, they seem to find a way to lose the game in the last few minutes after making the entire fan base actually believe that this year might be the one. Red Sox fans live and die with the Red Sox. The entire mood of the city revolves around whether or not the Red Sox won the game the night before. A win can cause riots and absolute craziness through out the city as shown by celebration following the game 7 win. Or in the case of last years game 7, the entire city groans as one and returns to its consistent phrase, "wait until next year." Boston is a Red Sox town and will always be that way due to the pain that the city has gone through, and the hope that when we do win that first World Series since 1918 a huge weight will be lifted off of us. Even with the Patriots establishing themselves as a dynasty in the NFL, baseball still has a strong hold on the city's sports heart.

Amazing

Well if anyone has watched the last three games on the American League Championship Series, one might have an idea of how great Boston’s sports teams and fans are. The Red Sox have staved off elimination three times now to force a game seven. No team in baseball history has ever come back to force a game let alone win one, which the Sox will being trying to do tomorrow. This is going to be a rather short post since I am still overjoyed by the victory. However my next post, will take a look at two of Boston’s historic sports teams in Bruins and the Celtics. I hope to show my readers why both franchises are at the top of their given sports, by consistent play and great ownership over the centuries. As I promised before below are some pictures from the Patriots from this season and last.

Red Sox Game 4

Visitors welcome to my blog; my name is Harry and I am from Boston Massachusetts. I write this blog as I watch the Red Sox in game four of the American League Championship Series, as I hope that they can win 4 games straight against those lovely New York Yankees. The purpose of this blog will be to educate my viewers about the city of Boston and hopefully prove to them that as many already know, Boston is the best sports city in the country. I plan to supply evidence of this through the actions of the sports teams, the devotion of the fans and heavy criticism of the media. While it might be hard from some people that have never been to Boston or meet a Bostonian, to understand why I consider the city the best; I hope that at the completion of my blogs, I will have at least made an impact on your decision.
